Discover colonial archives

The Chamber of Representatives is one of the two houses of the Belgian Parliament. Together with the Senate, it has formed the legislative branch of the Kingdom of Belgium since 1831.

Parliamentary Proceedings

The Belgian Parliament’s stance on colonial matters can primarily be traced through published sources. The Parliamentary Proceedings provide both complete and summarized accounts of the sessions. For the entire colonial period – from the 1870s to 1962 – the full proceedings are available online, for both the Chamber and the Senate.

Colonial archives

In addition, the Chamber of Representatives preserves a considerable amount of unpublished archival material. This includes preparatory documents for legislation, minutes of meetings, manuscripts of publications, as well as petitions and requests submitted to the Chamber. Of particular interest are the files concerning Belgium’s annexation of the Congo Free State in the early 20th century.
