Colonialism and Representation

Cover of the educational dossier “Congo: Kolonialisme en beeldvorming”
Past and present in photos, comics, and quilts

How do you let primary school children explore the phenomenon of colonialism?

In this teaching package, pupils investigate what colonialism really involved and how representation works. They do this using historical photographs from the Liberas collection, comics such as Tintin and Jommeke, and videos from Karrewiet and Studio Globo.

The package concludes with a creative workshop: the whole class collaborates to make a quilt based on their own personal stories. Inspiration comes from quilts created by women from the DR Congo, Peru, and the Arctic.
